MUSIC: A Brief IntroductionMusic: A Brief Introduction is a short textbook focusing on basic music theory. Each topic is approached from a wider perspective at first in order to provide context to the more specific skills and concepts covered. Exercises to reinforce concepts are scattered throughout the book and a set of composition prompts are included at the end. Students are encouraged to investigate topics further through their own research, engaging projects, and listening suggestions.

Full Description:
Music: A Brief Introduction is an intentionally short introduction to basic music concepts and skills, with practice exercises in each section, pages providing context for each topic and opportunities for extended learning. This book introduces basic note reading, intervals, scales, chords, form, tempo, dynamics, motives and melody. There are also composition prompts for potential assignments and staff paper for note taking included in the back of the book. Each section of the book begins with an introduction that offers context, asking students to consider how each skill fits into the wider world of music and even into their own lived experience. Because it is a physically small book and softcover, it doesn’t add to students' backpack burden more than absolutely necessary.
The book does not attempt to teach everything about every topic that it covers. Teachers and students can choose to go more deeply into any of the subjects covered in the book, or they can simply get a short introduction to each topic and leave it at that. Having pages with practice exercises allows students to practice new skills in class when they're first learning a new skill. For more extended practice, the assumption is that teachers will assign practice through one of the many online music theory platforms, which offer immediate feedback to students and automatically correct student practice so teachers can focus on classroom preparation and the assessment of more subjective elements of their course.
